STRATEGY AND GROWTH FOR ATTORNEYS BUILDING A BOUTIQUE LAW FIRM
Attorneys often start their own firms because they have developed a clear view of how the work should be done and want the freedom to practice that way. For some, that conviction grows out of years spent watching a promising practice stay constrained inside a structure that rewards something else. For others, it comes from recognizing that the firm their clients actually need does not exist yet. In either case, the conviction belongs to you, and it is the one part of this that cannot be delegated.
What can be built alongside you is everything that surrounds it. Once the firm exists, your legal ability is no longer the primary factor determining how it grows. Growth depends instead on whether the market understands what you do quickly enough to act on it, whether the people in a position to send you work know precisely when your name is the right answer, and whether the impression a prospective client forms before they ever contact you reflects the practice you have actually built. These are learnable disciplines, and most attorneys encounter them for the first time at the moment when a slow start is least affordable.
Founded on Purpose is a working partnership through that period. We establish the strategy, build the market position, and put the relationships and visibility in place that bring the right matters through the door, so that the firm you imagined is the firm the market recognizes.
Every engagement is shaped around the firm you are building, but the foundation is consistent. We begin by defining what the firm stands for and who it serves, because that decision governs every other decision that follows. From there we develop language that your referral sources can repeat accurately without you in the room, and we translate it across your website, your biography, your representative matters, and your professional profiles so that each of them tells the same story.
We then turn to the relationships that will actually produce work. Together we identify the clients, referring attorneys, and trusted advisors most likely to send you the matters you want, prioritize them into a list you can realistically maintain, and build a practical plan for staying meaningfully connected across the year.
Alongside that, we develop the visibility that establishes your credibility with the audiences you have chosen. That includes speaking, writing, leadership in organizations your clients respect, and the recognitions that reinforce your positioning. Where a launch or a lateral move is newsworthy, we handle the announcement so that it reaches in-house counsel, referring attorneys, and the legal press, and gives your entire network a natural reason to reach out.
Finally, we build the plan that holds all of it together, and I stay involved to make sure it moves. Business development competes with client work, and client work always feels more urgent. Regular working sessions, honest review, and hands-on implementation support are what keep a growth plan from becoming a document nobody opens.
This engagement is built for an attorney going out on their own, for a group of partners spinning off together, and for two or more partners combining with another small firm to create something none of them could build alone. The strategy differs in each case, but the underlying questions are the same.
Timing is equally flexible. Some clients begin months before they give notice, working quietly on positioning, client transition, and the announcement. Many others come to me a year or two after launching, once the firm is self-sustaining and they are ready to grow deliberately rather than rely on whatever referrals happen to arrive. Both are good moments to start, and the work is shaped accordingly.
Your corporate counsel and your accountant handle entity setup, operating agreements, insurance, and banking. My work begins where theirs concludes, with the strategy, positioning, and growth infrastructure that determine whether the firm you have created attracts the work you want.
Engagements begin at $3,000 per month, with a six-month initial term and continuation on a month-to-month basis thereafter. Scope varies with the size of the launch and the balance of advisory and hands-on implementation you prefer.
